Bay City is located in Matagorda County, Texas on the banks of the Colorado River. With a population of about 18,667, it is the largest city in the county and the county seat. The climate is humid subtropical which equates to relatively hot summers and mild winters with about forty-eight inches of annual rainfall. Riverside Park, located on the banks of the Colorado River, features campsites with full service RV hookups, a boat launching ramp, fishing pier, jogging trail, and park pavilions. Located adjacent to Riverside Park is the Rio Colorado Golf Course, an eighteen-hole championship course designed by Gary Player and featuring an equal mix of open and challenging holes.
For a look at the history of Matagorda County, visit the Matagorda County Museum built in 1918 and located in the old post office building that features a neoclassic Beaux Arts architectural style. The museum houses exhibits relative to early settlement, industry, and social culture of the county, as well as traveling exhibits that are displayed in the Stanley-Humphries Auditorium.
Bay City is known for its small town atmosphere and sense of community. The city hosts several festivals and parades each year, including the annual Christmas Parade and the Rice Festival, a major fundraising event for the Bay City Lions Club. The Lions recently raised over $52,000 in donations for local charities and charitable organizations.
